Watch: Alonso’s massive crash during the 2016 Australian Grand Prix

The 2016 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix race in Melbourne was red flagged on lap 19 of 57 after a shocking accident occurred between McLaren-Honda's Fernando Alonso and Haas's Esteban Gutierrez.

On the approach to turn 3 Alonso was tight on the back of the Mexican's car when he clipped the outside rear wheel, sending Gutierrez in a spin and Alonso out of control hurdling towards the gravel. As his car digs in he's sent spiralling through the air some 30 metres until finally coming to a stop aganst the barrier.

Despite the apparent severity of the accident, Alonso was able to quickly escape his wrecked McLaren to meet Gutierrez who also appeared unharmed.

When all was said and done, both drivers escaped unharmed though understandibly rattled. Alonso praised the FIA for their regulations around driver safety and his team for building a car that did exactly as intended when things go wrong.
